Established in 1921 as the Leicestershire and Rutland University College, today's University of Leicester has over 16,000 students from all corners of the globe, and has repeatedly ranked highly amongst British universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

Leicester’s other higher education institution is De Montfort University (DMU). Famous for its one of a kind business innovation centre, accomplishments in dance, performance arts and creative media.
